Income tax – turning tax returns into a savings plan

In this newsletter you will find detailed information about your income tax return(s) for the year 2025. We answer questions about extensions, submitting documents, rates, deductions, and our tips for submitting your information correctly. We also see the tax return as the starting point for sound financial advice. We carefully review your financial products. This turns your tax return into a savings plan!

The process in 6 steps (a detailed explanation follows below):

  1. We request an extension on your behalf;
  2. We request a VIA code – you return the code(s) to us;
  3. We then ask you for the missing documents;
  4. The codes are activated and the documents are registered. After that, preparation is scheduled;
  5. Once the return is completed, it is sent to you for approval;
  6. After submission, you can usually expect an assessment within 3 months.

Please read this newsletter carefully; this year too we will ensure financial peace of mind in your finances.

Tax advice

A personal meeting for changes in housing and work
The income tax return is a good starting point to pause together with your Poundwise adviser and review your personal and financial situation. Changes in work or private life over the past year, or expected in the coming year, may affect your income tax return as well as your other ongoing financial products. We would be happy to schedule a personal meeting with you to review your financial affairs. This helps us keep your financial household in order. To make an appointment, contact: secretariaat@poundwise.nl, or call: +31(0)20-3057555.

Timely, correct and complete submission of data
We ask you to provide the data for your 2025 tax return upon request and in the manner prescribed by us. Timely and correct submission can quickly result in significant savings and, in any case, prevent unnecessary costs. Below we explain how best to proceed.

Extension
Poundwise requests an extension for all tax advisory clients. You will not receive confirmation of this from the tax authorities. If you unexpectedly receive a reminder to file your return(s), please contact one of our advisers immediately. Without an extension, the 2025 return must be submitted before May 1, 2026; with an extension, this date is exactly one year later.

Poundwise has a large client base for whom we prepare and submit returns. Therefore, the work is spread over the extension period. We have clients who wish to file as soon as possible and others who prefer to file as late as possible. Poundwise tries to accommodate your wishes as much as possible.

Submission
You can submit your documents by email: belastingaangiften@poundwise.nl. We prefer to receive the documents complete and in one digital submission.
Documents already in our possession can of course be omitted. On our website you will find a document listing all required data and documents. Click here for the IB 2025 checklist.

Private return fee
If you have a Comfort subscription with us, the costs for preparing your return(s) are included in the monthly fee of this service subscription (per full subscription year you are entitled to one return). For more information about our service subscriptions, please contact us.

If you do not have a service subscription, the cost for one person is € 510.00, and if we can combine your return with that of your fiscal partner, the total for both returns is € 620.00 (for a regular private return for a resident taxpayer, excluding special circumstances).

This price assumes that documents are complete and submitted in one go, and that you promptly approve submission upon request. The fee excludes additional research, extra reminders, or other tax work. Such work is charged at the hourly rate of the relevant employee. If you would like a price indication in advance, please let us know. Rates for entrepreneurs’ and migration returns differ from the above. For questions, contact one of our tax advisers at +31(0)20-3057555.

Deductions
In 2025 there are various deductions that may be claimed under certain conditions, such as mortgage interest. These can be found on page 7 of the 2025 tax return checklist.

We advise you to review these and submit the applicable items to us. If you have relevant documents not listed in the checklist, please include them.
Certain expenses may be deducted as personal deductions under specific conditions.

Personal deductions consist of:

  • Partner alimony
  • Specific healthcare expenses (medical costs)
  • Expenses for pension equalization
  • Expenses for temporary home care of severely disabled persons
  • Donations
  • Remaining personal deductions from previous years

In addition to personal deductions, there are other deductible items (e.g. public transport commuting costs, annuity premiums, etc.). These costs are deductible from the income to which they relate. Not all costs are deductible; some are excluded or limited. If you are unsure whether certain costs are deductible, feel free to include them.

Processing the return
Once we have completed your return(s), they will be sent to you by email. Upon request, you can discuss them at our office. In some cases, we will invite you for a discussion. We kindly ask you to approve the return(s) as soon as possible after receipt. After your approval, the return is submitted to the tax authorities.
After submission, the tax authorities have an average processing time of 3 months. Formally, they have up to 3 years to issue a final assessment. Poundwise has no influence over this processing time.

Provisional assessments / refunds
A provisional assessment indicates how much tax you will receive or must pay, based on a provisional calculation. No rights can be derived from a provisional assessment.
Deductions: If there is a deductible item, you may choose to receive your refund in installments during the year. Poundwise can help you modify, stop, or request this.
If in the past you forgot to claim a deduction, Poundwise can request the tax authorities to grant it retroactively. Not guaranteed, but often worthwhile!
Tax payable: If you have profits, income from multiple sources, or assets, you will likely owe tax. You may choose to pay in advance. We can modify, stop, or request provisional assessments for 2025/2026. Note that costs apply (unless you have a service subscription).

Interest
The assessment states whether you receive or must pay tax interest. If you receive money, interest is only paid under specific conditions—usually you do not receive interest. If you must pay, interest is charged. Tax interest is not a penalty.
Interest is only calculated after the end of the tax year. The period runs from July 1, 2026, to the date stated on the assessment.

Electronic copies of assessments (EKA) / Assessment service messages
(SBA)
Poundwise only receives digital copies of assessments from the tax authorities if there is an active EKA/SBA request. We receive no copies of other assessments. The tax authorities confirm that digital copies are sent to our office. You can decide whether you agree. Each year you will receive a reminder that copies of your assessments are forwarded. You can revoke this authorization at any time. If you receive an assessment and are unsure whether it is correct or do not understand it, please contact our office.

Data from the tax authorities
We can request a VIA (pre-filled return) from the tax authorities. We check this data and supplement or amend it if necessary. Despite the VIA, we sometimes still need information from you. You will receive an activation code from the tax authorities that allows Poundwise to activate the registration (this authorization is valid for one year and per client). We kindly ask you to share the code with Poundwise by emailing it to: belastingaangiften@poundwise.nl (stating your full name or BSN). You may revoke this authorization at any time.

If you have any questions, you can contact us by phone at +31(0)20-3057555.
